Late in the day, in a misty drizzle, Olive pulled into the driveway alongside the house she was living in with her younger brother, Stevie. Five months earlier their parents had been driving home from a long night of drinking when their father lost control of his car and slammed into a utility pole. Olive had just gotten home for the summer after her junior year of college. Now she was home for good. Keeping the engine running, she put the wipers on intermittent: clarity followed by a blur. Dark mildew was taking over the house. Long strips of paint fluttered from its siding and shutters. Although their parents had neglected the house for many years, her mother had continued to tend her garden. Occasionally, Stevie had helped their mother plant, water, stake and snip. Now it had turned to grass and weed. Butts bobbed in the bird bath. Stevie tossed his cigarettes there before entering the house as Olive didn't want the smell of smoke inside. His car was parked partly in the rhododendron bushes that flanked the driveway. He had either returned early from his house painting job or, more likely, had never left home.
